| The analysis of institutional and professional talk has been a prominent topic in Conversation Analysis and related approaches as illustrated e.g. in Drew & Heritage (eds.) (1992) or Peräkylä et al. (2008). Formats like coaching and supervision, which can be seen as a specific type of professional talk-in-interaction, have not been in the focus of CA research so far. However, these formats have increasingly gained in importance, as is apparent from the major turnovers of large consulting institutes, from the growing numbers of professionals as well as professional trainings in these fields. In spite or maybe because of this growth in this sector, CA research has not been able to keep up. The research group LOCCS focuses on the analysis of talk-in-interaction in coaching, consulting and supervision. Based on German and English video and audio recordings of authentic coaching, consulting and supervision sessions, LOCCS investigates the following central questions: • Do coaching, consulting and supervision indeed constitute discrete forms of interaction as is often claimed by practitioners? Which empirically verifiable characteristics in these formats can CA and related methods account for? • How can the research results be transferred to coaching/supervision practice and what can they contribute to the ongoing debate on professionalization and quality standards in these fields? This poster intends to present LOCCS’ starting points, aims and central questions, give an overview of preliminary results of the individual studies as well as of our approach to data akquisition and the expansion of the existing corpus. |
